Los
Angeles 1925: 23-year-old Harmony (Maggie Q), daughter
of a Chinese mother and American father, has come to the US
from Singapore in order to find her father. When her mother,
Mei Ling (Fann Wong), was just a young woman she fell
in love with businessman Richard Barclay (Philippe Brenninkmeyer),
who promised to marry her - but insisted he first had to go
back to America and get a divorce. He never returned to Singapore.
Mei Ling cut herself off completely from her family, bringing
up Harmony by herself and waiting in Singapore for the love
of her life to return one day. Her wait was in vain. Now, with
the help of a valuable signet ring that bears the initials of
Richard Barclay, Harmony has been given the task of finding
her father.
Luck
appears to smile on her when a jeweller in Los Angeles recognizes
the ring and arranges for Harmony to meet the Barclay family.
But the meeting is a trap, and Harmony is arrested, accused
of having stolen the ring. Nobody seems prepared to believe
her when she insists that Richard Barclay gave the ring to her
mother, Mei Ling, all those years ago. However, Richard's adopted
son, Gideon (Daniel Morgenroth), is fascinated by the
beautiful Harmony from the very first moment, and he secures
her release. Harmony explains to him what happened to his father
in Singapore, and then he is forced to tell her that Richard
Barclay died on the voyage back to the US.
When
she gets word just a few days later that her mother has died
in Singapore, Harmony resolves to stay in Los Angeles and try
to make a living by producing and selling traditional Chinese
remedies. With Gideon as her partner she starts a company, calling
it House of Harmony.
Gideon's mother, Fiona, is horrified when she realizes that
her son and Harmony are apparently more than just business partners.
When Gideon decides he wants to marry Harmony, Fiona vows to
prevent an alliance that she regards as utterly impossible.
And she succeeds; only after years of separation do Harmony
and Gideon finally manage to come together at last. (Source:
